Monday, we had the opportunity to reflect on our mastery of setting. We then had the chance to see Melanie's CEL on "The Storm" and then had the opportunity to grade her work. Then we learned about characterization and STEAL.
Homework: 1. You will first do a characterization of one of your peers in class using STEAL. This should take you about 20 minutes max. 2. You are going to then read the poem "Papa's Waltz" and annotate it for setting (with the squiggly line) and characterization by boxing it. 3. Your goal is to locate the theme. It does not have to be perfect, but you want to give it a try. 4. Then you want to write your cel (at least half a page): Carefully read the following poem the “Papa's Waltz” by Theodore Roethke. Then write a well-organized essay in which you analyze the setting and characterization. In your analysis, you may wish to consider such literary elements as selection of detail, imagery, figurative language, and diction. 5. Submit you CEL to turnitin.com by 9pm
Your homework is to return to "The Storm" and then revise your work. We had the opportunity to ask questions that were preventing us from writing at our best. Hopefully you remember what we discussed. At the end of our time you all suggested you needed more time. So you now have the time. I have started writing my CEL for you all and I have made a video. Please watch it if you would like to get some extra support. I have also found some other videos that you might watch or play in the background as you are writing. *Added part II of the video
Your revision will be Due Sunday at 9pm. Please make sure you submit by then and if you need some help with your writing please send me your specific questions (please do not just send me your entire cel).
This goes back over the three parts of Setting, but it connects it to the concept of mood which I don't tend to think is helpful and not what we do in AP, but he has some good insights and it might be helpful to rehear the three parts of setting
This video goes into more depth on the elements of setting. It talks about how it affects the story and the characters.
This is another video that I think can be helpful because it gives an example of writing about setting with a different passage. It can give you practice with a different reading and help you see how to write about setting
